The Power of Authentic Connections: Finding Your True Self Through Your Values
During a recent trip, I found myself more authentically “me” than ever before. The trip was a perfect blend of intimacy, adventure, and learning—my three favorite things—without any of the usual distractions. It was a space where I could fully embrace who I am and wanted to be. What a joyful experience!
After I returned, I wondered how to maintain that authenticity when not in my perfect trifecta. I’ve been on a quest to find ways to be that authentic self all the time, whether at work, with friends, or in new encounters.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that authenticity isn’t just about being true to yourself; it’s about aligning with your values and finding spaces where those values can flourish. It’s about discovering and embracing projects and opportunities that resonate with your core beliefs, like my work with the Ancient Art Archive and the Denver Art Museum. These experiences have been more than just professional opportunities—they are a reflection of my values and passions, making the work feel both magical and meaningful.
In the end, it’s about finding those moments and spaces where you can be your true self. It’s about recognizing that you don’t have to perform or fit into a mold to be valued. Instead, you can be authentic and still find great fulfillment and success.
A second realization I’ve had is that authenticity generates connection — the kind of connection that allows you to build meaningful relationships and create impactful work. By being more authentic, I’m finding my people—the ones who truly resonate with my core values and beliefs. When you connect around values instead of content, it’s remarkable how many opportunities arise to expand your perspective and your thinking in a way that’s consistent with your authenticity.
For example, I’ve always been skeptical of the authenticity of social media interactions. (That’s the diplomatic way to express it — usually it comes out as, “I hate social media!”). Despite my aversion to social media and anything remotely resembling self-promotion, an authentic relationship allowed me to see the beauty of the idea of using an online platform as a tool for genuine expression — a significant shift in perspective!
The online platform that created this shift was Digital Handshake. It’s a platform that helps you maintain that authenticity. It allows you to show different facets of yourself without the pressure of constantly proving your worth.
In other words, an online presence, when used authentically, is not just an efficient tool but also a reflection of one’s true self. It’s not about putting on a mask or siloing your life, it’s about presenting an honest and multi-faceted version of who you are.
So, whether you’re navigating your career, your passions, or your personal life, remember that being true to yourself and your values will lead to the most genuine and rewarding experiences. It’s not about having to constantly prove yourself but about finding the right environments where your true self can shine through.
Embrace your authenticity, and you’ll find that the right connections and opportunities will follow.
